About Us

Mission Statement

The Friends of Lake Marion is a neighborhood / community organization committed to preserving, protecting and improving the recreational and educational potential of Lake Marion Park.

History

We began about 20 – 25 years ago to help the Village of Mazomanie with some of the clean up and general maintenance of the park area. While we have been somewhat under the radar for most of that time we feel we have complemented the work of the Village and the excellent volunteer efforts of the Wisconsin River Sportsman’s Club. During this period we have provided covered trash bins and kept them emptied and cleaned, planted flowers, painted, weeded, cleared areas, removed downed trees and mulched around others to facilitate mowing. We raised and committed $3,000.00 to these projects and the purchase of seven benches for the park.

Going Forward

Recent events relating to the dam removal and re-direction of Black Earth Creek have created a new and greater challenge to the efforts to preserve and improve Lake Marion and the diverse natural resources surrounding it.  We believe that in this challenge lies the opportunity for the creation of an even better Lake / Wetland / Prairie-Savannah / Wildlife Area with greater recreational and educational options for residents of our community and the region … now and for future generations.

Many exciting and promising things are happening in the area: the Wolf-Run and Good Neighbor projects, the improvement of recreational opportunities and continued clean-up of Black Earth Creek which flows into the Lower Wisconsin Riverway Preserve. This puts Mazomanie and the Lake Marion Improvement Project in a key position to benefit as a focal point between the ” Gateway to the Driftless Area” and the nearly unlimited recreational options in the Baraboo-Wisconsin Dells area.

In recent weeks The Friends of Lake Marion have re-organized, re-energized, and re-imagined our role in a process where many people are coming together who have a wide range of talents and abilities and who are highly motivated and are willing to work in cooperation with the Village of Mazomanie and other and other interested groups to help re-create a better Lake Marion Natural Resource for all to enjoy.
